I've decided to take a working-vacation from Butch'n'Spike to get my life and strip in order. This will an updateless month or three while I work on my storypacing, the website, and creating a work/comic/art/music/food/sleep/family routine. And remember to brush my teeth. All that stuff. I've desperatley needing it, and I'm sure the strip will be the better for it when I return! Thanks to anyone who's been reading Butch & Spike up to this point. Look forward to a better strip in a few months! In the meantime, check out SkellingtonArt, which I'll be revamping a bit, and read Harmless Free Radicals and Studio 347. You should also pick up the new mystery Such a Killing Crime, a folk-music murder by Rob Lopresti, because he's a cool guy.

I checked in my Almanac of Excuses, and this week it suggested computer trouble. So here goes: The new installation of XP gave the computer an existential dillema, so we were without 'net - hence, no comic. On t'other hand, seeing as I declared Monday update day, this one's only 3 days late - something of a record for my post-graduation ennui.
July 24, 2005
I'm changing my update schedule to Mondays until further notice, as I can't seem to settle back into my done-by-Friday routine. Actually, I can't seem to settle into ANY routine. It doesn't help that during the last two weeks HP:6 came out AND I was already starting book 3 of Tad William's 'Otherland' - a series so d*mned long that when the editor saw the THIRD 1000 page manuscript he threw up his hands in despair and let William's publish whatever he wanted to. I kept asking myself 'why am I still reading this?', but after investing that much time in it, you HAVE to finish! Note: This does NOT apply to the Wheel of Time. There is no reason to even start it, and the author clearly has no intention of finishing it, so why should you?

What, ANOTHER non-story-arc page? Yeah - for an unemployed member of the plebian hordes I've been really busy, first entertaining at Tall Ships: Tacoma all weekend and now off to spend a few days at the Centrum Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. Thought you'd prefer another ancient strip to blank nothingness.

No comic last week - my family gave me the plague as a graduation gift. Anything I put online would have been contagious...which is not a bad idea, really (bigger readership through viral transmission - get your bug today!). I'm slowly working on the site as well as transfering the whole thing over to www.bs.skellingtonart.com, where I have more control of the server.

I'm DONE! I have an extra two letters after my name (two letters, sounds like a sheep), and I'm now in Olympia, Washington, searching for work. Anyone looking for a second-rate cartoonist? In other news I'm working on a fancier character page and you FINALLY get to see what Butch finds in the library.
June 10th, 2005
Yes, you'll have to wait yet another week to find out what's going on in the library. The current splash page explains why I've been busy.
May 27, 2005
Due to pre-graduation pressures including projects, papers, and running a class exhibition, there will be no new Butch & Spike this week. There will be a new strip next week featuring Butch's adventures in the library, followed by a one-off filler in 'honor' of my graduation. After that we'll return to our regularly scheduled strips, along with more improvements on the web site (Both the comic and my art site). In the meantime, if my readers (either of you) would e-mail me, I'd love to know what might improve the site - forum/guestbook, wallpaper, better character page? Thankyou for your patience, and remember, after June 11th you'll be reading a comic strip made by someone with a BA, which must be so much better...right?
May 20, 2005
Yes, after weeks of waiting, here's the strip that was supposed to air on the 6th. You may want to refresh yourself on the nature of Butch's current mission. I made up for the long wait with a bit of extra detail on this strip.
May 13, 2005
Seeing I was harried, stressed, and hadn't slept in 24 hours, a friend of mine suggested I draw a splash page. So I did. On the back of a grocery receipt in the middle of class, no less. The strip originally intended for May 6th WILL come May 20th - Scout's Honor (Don't ask where I got it - surplus scout supply or something).

Ok, so despite an extremely packed schedule and huge backlog of work, I was going to have a comic up for you, my loyal fan, as promised. Then, due to my amazing grace, this happened. Well, not quite this, as the ink puddles were much nicer looking before I mopped black from running onto my kitchen floor. I decided to post it anyway for your mirth, not to mention this enlightening look at my comic process (or rather, something I try to keep out of my comic process as much as possible). Notice, my loyal fans (both of you), that I sacrifice my pride to your amusement. You don't get this kind of service in newspaper funnies. Please join us next Friday when I will attempt to present the same strip, this time without extra abstract inking.

Back on the West Coast with a brand new strip. The ink might still be a tad wet. More than anything else I've ever done, the last panel of this strip makes me think 'coloring book'. Also, the goat's sign says "(L)awn (M)ower." In case you're curious.

I'm living the high life in NYC, and this comic is here by the good graces of one of the BCBugle staff. This is culled from the dusty archives - a few strips from back before I graduated from high school. Next week we'll resume your regularly scheduled adventuring.
April 15, 2005
I'm off to NYC for a week, so next week's comic will be something a little different.

You never give me your money - you only give me your funny paper. And in the middle of negotiations, you break down...The Beatles and I are having a moment. Today's strip is 'Negotiations.'
April 1, 2005
No April Fools here, just us normal fools. For your edification and enlightenment, in France one says 'Poisson d'Avril' on April 1st where we would say April Fools - that translates as 'April fish.'

I really like drawing the happy little goblin.

One of my favorite punch-lines sees the light of day. Demand YOUR right to a traditional folkwear! In more realistic news, I'll be out of town for a week, but my Fan should get his/her comic on Firday just the same, thanks to a bit of speedy drawing on my part and the kindness of my good friend Fenmere, publisher of The Bellingham Comics Bugle.
March 11, 2005
I've made some cosmetic changes to the website, and even more exciting, my art site is finally live! Visit www.skellingtonart.com - yet another work in progress. I see I'll have to make a decision about the fate of this news-spot pretty soon, though, or it will go down'n'down'n'down forever.

Anyone in the Northwest Washington area is strongly encouraged to come to the '15' show opening reception at the Nightlight bar in Bellingham, this monday, from 6 to 9 pm. If you can't make that, the show runs until the 31st - check out my work and my classmates' work. That's 'high' art, y'know, not this 'low' art here...granted, I can only do 'high' art with either the appropriate chemicals or a footstool.

This week you get a look at the other title character, and my personal mascot - Spike! Also, a quick word on the drawing chronology - this strip was actually done in spring of 2004. The last one was done in late 2003, and relettered. The three before that were drawn within the last few months. I'm doing a lot of re-lettering, a little re-drawing, and a bit of re-touching. Re-lettering? Yes. Hand lettering? Yes. Why? Apparently I have a touch of artists' masachism. It's not uncommon. As to all the redoing - well, I've heard an idea about doing things right the first time, but I'm skeptical. Sounds like a slacker concept to me. : - )

This comic brought to you in part by the Smothers Brother's version of "The Streets of Laredo." I see by your outfit that you are a cowboy - I see by your outfit you are a cowboy too. We see by our outfits that we are both cowboys - if you get an outfit you can be a cowboy too!' Also brought to you by the letter 'e'.

I updated the site with a simple php system. If you notice any problems, please contact me at .

Butch & Spike have been kicking 'round my noggin since one o'clock am some night in 2001. I always intended BS to eventually be a web comic, but I never actually expected it to be - I'm not known for getting things off the ground. If I'd been a Wright Brother, I would A, be a guy with a funky name and B, the Wright Flier would never have taken off. I would proudly point to the half composted pile of in the backyard and say, "That, my friend, will someday be a flying machine!"
Luckily, I'm tinkering with a field that requires far less capital, technical savvy, and/or willingness to throw oneself off of promontories. That being the case, my gals are actually getting their chance on the web. Share and Enjoy! (And remember, this comic is almost, but not completely, entirely unlike tea).
